History:
In 1979 the Ford Mustang was chosen as the Official Pace Car of the annual Indianapolis 500 race.
Ford commemorated this event with the Indy 500 Pace Car Mustang.
The Pace Car is a tribute to the actual pace cars used by Ford to promote the introduction of the Third Generation Mustang during the 1979 Indianapolis 500 race.
The Indianapolis Pace Cars were all finished in pewter and black with orange and red graphics.
The front end featured a unique air dam with fog lights, and full-length non-functional cowl type hood scoop.
It had a rear spoiler, forged metric wheels, Recaro front seats and a cassette deck.
The production cars included a sunroof.
However, the three actual pace cars were fitted with a T-top by Cars & Concepts of Brighton, MI.
Two engines were offered, a turbocharged 2.
3L inline four-cylinder, or a 5.
0L naturally aspirated V8.
This car is equipped with the turbocharged 2.
3-liter inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission.
Production numbers on the 2.
3L OHC Turbo Four were 5,970 and the 5.
0L was 4,517 with a grand total of 10,487 produced.
The 1979 Ford Mustang Indianapolis Pace Car was only offered for one year.
Engine & Transmission:
The mechanics on this car have been well sorted.
The collector had the car gone through and a new turbo was installed (see documents and video).
The car comes with the 2.
3L OHC Turbo Four cylinder mated with a four speed manual transmission and heavy duty suspension.
Drives very smooth and comes with Build Sheet.
Body:
The body is original and the paint shows signs of age but holds up nicely.
The graphics are cracked in many places (see video).
All glass is clean, except one fog lamp is cracked and left rear tail lamp has a crack, new tires, all panels are straight with excellent gaps.
I have taken many photos too show the condition, be sure and look at the link to extend photos.
Interior:
The interior is a time capsule back to 1979.
The factory equipped these cars with front Recaro seats, cassette deck, tilting sunroof and black & multicolor cloth upholstery.
The door skins and seats are very nice.
The dash is clean.
This cars interior is in great shape and is a big part of enjoying the driving experience.
Summary:
This is a well sorted survivor of the 1979 Indianapolis Mustang Pace Car.
This example is perfect for cruising during the week and taking to car shows on the weekend.
The collector likes to use his cars and make them as good as he can for his personal use.
