The City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division is seeking two Park Ambassadors to join the Park Ambassador program.
Park Ambassadors provide a positive presence in Eugene's parks and natural areas.
Park Ambassadors serve multiple roles by providing information, responding to concerns reported by the public, helping solve park user conflicts, and seeking voluntary compliance of park rules.
Park Ambassadors work closely with the Community Engagement and Park Operations sections, and the Eugene Police Department's Park Resource Officers.
The Park Ambassador position is under general direction from a higher classification.
The position provides direction to seasonal Park Ambassadors and helps coordinate the day-to-day operations of the team.
The ideal candidate for this position is a good communicator who can remain calm during difficult conversations and apply de-escalation skills when needed.
You can collaborate within the city organization, with active external partners, and community members a myriad of viewpoints.
You care about parks, nature, and people; are inclusive and culturally competent, and can work as a team when needed.
You are comfortable using or learning mobile technology tools to track work, and continuously adapt, adjust, and implement strategies for innovative solutions that best fit the organization.
You are comfortable conducting a larger percentage of your work throughout the year by bike.
Effective 7/1/2023 AFSCME represented positions will receive a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase.

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following Patrols assigned area on foot, by bicycle and/or by vehicle.
Patrols parks for compliance with park rules.
Seeks voluntary compliance for park rules such as dogs off leash, smoking, and prohibited structures or enclosures.
Responds to reports from the public of safety concerns generated through phone call, emails, and through online reporting.
Follows up with members of the public on outcome of the follow up.
Works in collaboration with the City of Eugene Park Resource Officers when unable to gain voluntary compliance with park rules.
Provides the public with information about parks, trails, natural areas, and public spaces in Eugene.
Information includes history, activities, rules, hours, and other general information.
Posts notices of cleanup for prohibited enclosures or structures.
Conducts minor clean ups as needed.
Provides social service agency information as needed to patrons.
Utilizes a computer and handheld mobile devices to track work.
Writes daily reports.
Monitors areas for damage to grounds, equipment and/or facilities and generates maintenance work orders for repairs, as needed.
Reports emergencies and unlawful activities to Central Lane Communications.
Identifies ongoing issues or trends related to usage, safety, customer service etc.
Makes field decisions on the need to bring emergency responders such as EPD, fire, and Cahoots to a scene.
Provides supervisors and managers with necessary information to coordinate follow up on citizen concerns.
Attends neighborhood and community events to promote knowledge of safety programs and use of public spaces.
Attends required trainings and classes.
May act in capacity of Lead Park Ambassador.
May provide direction to seasonal staff.
Performs other duties as required.

Four years' increasingly responsible experience providing customer service with some conflict resolution experience and/or customer service experience occurring in a social service or safety and security role.
Some college desired.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain an appropriate valid Oregon Driver's license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire CPR/AED and First Aid training certificates.
Possession of, or ability to obtain with 30 days of hire DPSST certification.

Learn applicable state and city laws, codes, zoning, and administrative rules and legal procedures in a reasonable period.
Utilize computer and handheld mobile devices to track activities, make service requests and write reports.
Work harmoniously and maintain effective working relationships with the public, the department, City organization and other agencies, and effectively communicate to a diverse public.
Provide excellent customer service in sometimes stressful situations and have the ability to remain calm, clear, professional, and positive, when explaining policies, rules and procedures, while also being able to assess possible violations, develop solutions and apply practical judgement.
Apply conflict resolution and communication techniques, to communicate effectively with diverse communities and the ability to adjust communication style to audiences as appropriate.
Learn signs of mental illness and substance abuse and best practices for communicating with people experience them.
Exercise discretion and judgement in determining the appropriate course of action when dealing with public nuisances, group conflicts and public interactions and determine when situations require police assistance/intervention.
Work independently and in a team dynamic.
While maintaining safety, approach individuals engaged in low and high-risk rule violations; assess situation; de-escalate and encourage compliance when appropriate.
Communicate effectively with Central Lane Communications, members of the Eugene Police Department, or other security service employees.
Provide patrons with general referral information such as local points of interest, social service agency resources, etc.
Observe possible safety hazards and take appropriate action.
Work outdoors in various weather situations.
Safely operate a bicycle and obey traffic laws.
Prepare legible reports that reflect accurate reporting of information.
Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Supplemental Information Physical Requirements/Working Conditions Park Ambassadors work outside in all weather conditions.
They primarily work by bike during the drier months and bike many miles in a given day.
The work also requires lifting and hauling items left behind or dumped in parks as needed.
What to Expect from our Selection Process:
Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training.
The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes.
In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required.
Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment.
Marijuana use is evaluated consistent with current state law regulations.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
